Many of you know that we have a lagoon in our back yard and from time to time we have an alligator or two. We are also frequently visited by otters. This is one has been hanging out this week. The Otter is 3 to 4 foot long has dark brown hair is a powerful swimmer with webbed toes and short legs. It is a protected animal in Florida but not endangered. In the past we have had a visit from three of them a male, female and baby. The babies are called petangs. They are usually playful and are looking for food. They eat fish, crawfish, snakes, insects and even birds. They also can hold their breath for up to 8 minutes so they can really swim a long way under water.
Mandy watches to Otter cruising up and back in the lagoon. This one likes to swim in the middle and occasionally go towards the bank. Mandy is not sure what to think about it. From time to time this one will also stop and snort at her. We are careful to watch her and make sure there isn't a play date between them. Otters have been known to carry rabbies and have even attacked dogs. Good to watch from a distance!!!
